The Riva 2026 Bike Festival showcases a diverse range of products, from protective gear to innovative footwear and eyewear. Here's a detailed analysis of some of the key offerings:
Seryt: Lightweight Protection
Seryt, a new brand founded by former downhill racer Carlo Gambirasio, presents a range of lightweight knee and elbow pads. These pads are designed for simplicity and minimalism, featuring a level one pad on the face and silicone strips at the top for a secure fit. The standout feature is their construction technique, where the protection is seamlessly integrated into the fabric, eliminating any joins or seams. This not only enhances comfort but also ensures that the pads remain odor-free for longer periods. The brand also caters to younger riders with a kids' version available down to four years old, addressing a gap in the market. Gambirasio's prototype kneepad for serious riders offers side protection and robust retention, while still maintaining a lightweight and airy feel.
Protective Socks and Wrist Braces
The festival also introduced innovative protective socks designed to provide comfort during high-impact situations. These socks are a unique fashion statement, challenging the traditional perception of long socks. Additionally, Gambirasio showcased a niche product - a brace for riders with broken wrists. This brace allows for the insertion of a metal plate during the initial healing phase, providing proper immobilization. As the healing progresses, the metal can be replaced with a Teflon support for increased mobility, and finally, with a plastic support for everyday use.
Hydration and Protection Combo
Bluegrass presented a unique hydration vest/chest and back protector combination. This design integrates twin pockets for standard hydration vest functionality at the front and a hydration bladder compartment at the back. The vest is designed to be worn over riding gear, but it can also be lined with the same material as their skin-friendly garments, offering versatility. Additionally, Bluegrass showcased a more conventional Arto vest chest and back protector, providing a range of options for riders.
Eyewear and Footwear Innovations
Julbo displayed their Fast Light glasses in three sizes (M, L, and XL) to ensure a perfect fit for various face shapes. These glasses offer impressive visual clarity and are remarkably lightweight. Northwave's Extreme X and Extreme XT shoes were also on display, with the X being a high-end racing shoe featuring a carbon sole and a unique Boa system release mechanism. The XT version offers a more affordable option with a slightly less stiff sole and additional tread.
Sidi's Descentio downhill shoe impressed with its lightweight design and robust features. The shoe incorporates Sidi's own rubber compound for flat pedals and D30 padding for ankle protection. The inclusion of both a Boa and a strap system addresses the common issue of Boa systems exploding on impact, ensuring a secure and comfortable ride. Sidi's Motus trail shoes also caught my attention with their clean and understated upper, complemented by a gaudy pattern on the sole.
The Indomita shoe, described as 'built to hold nothing back,' raised some questions. While it appears well-designed and clipless-compatible, the phrase 'holding nothing back' seems confusing and may be a play on words. Fizik's Terra Ergolace shoes, which I'm a fan of, now feature a wider toe box and a quick lace system, addressing the issue of sizing and comfort.
Abus unveiled their Targon convertible helmet, a notable addition to the festival. This helmet is produced in their Italian factory and boasts several innovative features. The fit dial at the back can be adjusted in both directions or pushed in for easy release, even with gloves. The ergonomics of the chinbar on/off mechanism have been carefully considered, allowing riders to make adjustments on the fly without unnecessary fuss. Additionally, Abus helmets use sewed straps, eliminating the use of plastic.
This year's Riva 2026 Bike Festival highlights the continuous innovation in the cycling industry, with a focus on protection, comfort, and style. From lightweight padding to unique hydration systems and advanced footwear, riders now have a wide array of options to enhance their cycling experience.
